In the middle of the city, two very different monuments can be found almost facing each other. One of them is the well-known Newborn. The monument was unveiled on the day of Serbia's declaration of independence. (Almost) Every year it is redesigned. Once with the flags of all the countries that recognize Kosovo as an independent state, another time the design drew attention to the strict visa regulations for Kosovars, but the design always includes a political statement. On this year's 10th anniversary occasion, the design was once more updated.
Not far from the capital lies the excavation site of Ulpiana. The largest site of its kind in Kosovo testifies to the strategic importance of the region and was founded there not least because of the nearby precious metal deposits.
It is with much heart and soul that the very committed local guide named “Milot” explains everything there is to know about the excavations of the Roman city, and the conjectures about- and probabilities of the finds in the area. The love for archaeology and his country is almost palpable. It is a one of a kind experience to let him guide you through the area!
The National Library of Kosovo "Pjetër Bogdani" is also the largest library in Kosovo. It is located in the capital “Pristina” and is named after the Albanian Catholic author “Pjetër Bogdani”. The BKK houses a large collection of historical and cultural works dealing with Kosovo and its people. For Albanology, the library is an important location.
"In Kosovo, memorials to the victims of the war can be found everywhere. One of the most important is the memorial to Adem Jashari, in the small village Prekaz. Jashari is a namesake of schools, squares, streets and even the airport was named after him."
Or at least plastic flowers, which are laid down at the memorials. The veneration at the monuments, which are deliberately designed with marble, waving flags and the likenesses of the martyrs, cannot be truly understood by outsiders. To our eyes, these oversized monuments sometimes present a strange image. But precisely because this romanticized hero cult is so important to the Kosovo Albanians, the Jeshari memorial deserves a visit. It offers some insight into the - to us sometimes opaque - soul of the country's inhabitants.
Near the town of Gjakova, the Tailors' Bridge can be admired. It was built at the end of the 15th century and the name goes back to the guild of tailors which commissioned the bridge. Particularly impressive is the direct comparison with the modern transit bridge, which runs next to it in parallel.
Prizren is considered the most beautiful city in Kosovo and a cultural center. Even the very first glance upon arrival leaves no doubt that this can only be true. The city nestles picturesquely between the river “Drin” and the mountain Sar Planina. Stone bridges cross the river, and the fortress of Prizren towers over the city.
There is much to experience here. Visitors may inform themselves about the destinations of the League of Prizren in the museum, enjoy stunning views of the city from the fortress, and taste the best Cevapcici in all of Kosovo. The Mosque of Sinan Pasha is also worth a visit.
Why not take a look inside the Gadime stalactite cave? As the legend goes: Once when a hare was chased through the cave by a hunting dog, both disappeared in the dark and only reappeared in the village of Janjeva, 16 kilometers away.
So far, speleologists have not been able to confirm that the cave extends that far. However, during their investigations, they found an underground lake about 20 meters deep and at least as wide. The age of the cave is estimated at 80 million years. After human bones were found there, it seems reasonable to assume that the cave also served as a shelter.
In spring, Kosovo is wonderfully green. For nature lovers, a trip to Radavc and a visit to the waterfalls comes highly recommended. The Drin River is not far from the village and shows its most beautiful side in Radavc, in the form of springs and waterfalls. A secured path leads over and along the falls to a stalactite cave, which can also be visited. Fresh fish, which enjoys an excellent reputation, can be eaten in the area.
The Mirusha is surrounded by several small waterfalls of the Mirusha River, which flows along the south of the Gremnik Mountains. The distance from the capital Pristina is about 1 hour. For people who like hiking, this peaceful place is an oasis of calm.
Brezovica is an inviting ski and snowboarding resort - there are 15.6 km of slopes available, with nine lifts to transport guests to snowtime fun. The winter sports area is situated at an altitude of 1,718 to 2,522 meters. Brezovica is the largest ski center in Kosovo, in the municipality of Shtërpcës (Štrpce) in the south of the country. It is located about 20 kilometers east of Prizren and five kilometers southwest of the main town of Shterpcës. The ski resort is located on the north-western slopes of the eastern Malet e Sharrit (Šar Planina) - a mountain range about 80 kilometers long that stretches between Kosovo and Macedonia and reaches heights of over 2000 meters. An unforgettable experience for young and old alike!
